Okay so due to doing my animation on a rush hour & due to estimating that my story plot is too long for the maximum 1 minute requirement, i had to do some slight tweakings on some of the frames in my storyboard and also change the story of the end.

BEGGINING…

Creature was walking on the forest.
He saw a “golden umbrella”, amazed & thought about being a millionaire.
As he was about to touch it, a beautiful female creature appeared.
Female tried to seduce him.
He was mesmerize by her beauty & after a few secs he snap out in reality and realise the golden umbrella dissapeared & so did the girl.

MIDDLE…

He look for the girl around the forest and found her sitting down on a cliff.
He sneakily & silently walk across her.
Then he kungfu kicked her.
Girl fell down in the cliff along with the umbrella.
Male creature tripped accidently by a rock when he landed from kicking her then falls on the cliff.

END…

They fell over a cliff, both hanging on the umbrella.
They both realise that there’s no point of fighting over such things. And in slow motion, they both find each other falling for each other.
Then they both kissed at the end & umbrella shrinks between them as a symbol of what brought them closer at the end.

These two pictures below aren’t created by me. Image A, is a 3D graphic wallpaper i used for my umbrella design. I wanted a gold 3D effect for my umbrella design and i came across this picture in google images & thought it fit perfectly with the design concept i wanted for the umbrella. I’m not quite familiar yet with Illustrator so i don’t know how to make such effects, so i thought i’d use these instead.

Image B, is the background i used for the scene where the male creature was hypnotized by the seductive female creature. I had this rotated for every frame so it created that spiral, hallucinating effect. It was a rush hour when i was doing my last frames so i didn’t have time to actually create a similar background to this originally.

Final character design for both male & female.

I wanted to accesorise them, so they won’t have that plain look to them. I thought it’s appealing this way. Pink, short hair, kissable lips, ribbon on the head, necklace, curve body shape for the female to illustrate to the audience straight away that she is one seductive, sexy feminine character. I created this slightly chubby green male creature in contrast with the sexy creature. I wanted to create this cute character, made him green to give off that natural & smart appeal.

The creations of these characters are all done in Photoshop. Hand drawn then uploaded in photoshop for colouring & editing.

Analysis of Final Completed Animation:

Overall i am pretty happy with the outcome of my approx1 minute project animation. It was definitely time consuming as i only created it using windows live movie maker and not a proper animation software.

Storyboard plan for my 1minute Animation. A very quick sketches to show my initial ideas of what’s going to happen.

The character drawn here isn’t the exact character i’ll be using for my animation. I just thought it would be a lot more interesting to look at if i use a random character instead of plain stickman drawings. Mize Wazowski from monster inc inspired me to draw a similar figure to my storyboard.

DECIDED PLOT.

Okay so i finally made up my mind between the 2 ideas and decided to go for idea 2 (about 2 creatures fighting over a golden umbrella). I did some few tweakings here and there to lessen the plot & made it fit more with the time production & the maximum of 1 minute animation.

BEGGINING…

Creature was walking on the forest.
He saw a “golden umbrella”, amazed & thought about being a millionaire.
As he was about to touch it, a beautiful female creature appeared.
Female tried to seduce him.
He was mesmerize by her beauty & after a few secs he snap out in reality and realise the golden umbrella dissapeared & so did the girl.

MIDDLE…

He look for the girl around the forest and found her sleeping on the tree with umbrella hanging from her feet.
He cautiously took umbrella away.
Then as he turn around, the girl popped in front, angry and took umbrella away from him.
They fought over the golden umbrella for hours.

END…

They fell over a cliff, both hanging on the umbrella.
Girl tried to seduce him again & succeeded.
Male forgot about the umbrella once again, snapped out and found himself falling in fast motion & saw girl with the umbrella waving at him on the top.
Girl winked at camera and umbrella flies over the camera to close the story.

Character design ideas for my piece of animation.

THE NARRATIVE.

Okay, so i can’t quite decide which one to go for between these 2 narrative ideas that i have in my head. They’re both good plots, not perfect, but are attainable for the 1 minute Animation. There are parts that definitely needs to be simplified as well as areas that needs tweaking.

Idea 1: About two creatures who fights over an umbrella but falls in love at the end.

Male creature comes across a ’legendary umbrella’ on a rocky mountain side.
Just when he’s about to touch the ‘legendary umbrella’ (cheesy music plays on the background*) a beautiful female creature appeared out of nowhere.
Female creature uses her beauty to seduce the male creature (bats eyelashes* wiggles her tail/ flaps her hair*)
Male creature was hypnotized/mesmerized by her beauty. (Wide eyed, drooling*)
Female creature gets the umbrella and walks away.
Male creature is still hypnotized. (Drooling*)
After a few secs he snaps out of it and realize the female & the umbrella are gone.
He looked for her around the forest and sees the female creature sleeping.
The male creature quietly took the umbrella from her.
When he was just about to leave, the moment he turned around, the female creature popped out in front of him, wide eyed and angry.
They fought over the umbrella & attacked each other.
Both creatures fell in the mountain in a slow motion action.
They both held onto the umbrella, face to face (romantic song plays in the background* female bats her eyelashes* male has heart symbol in his eyes, his mouth jaw drop*) both fell in love all over again until they realise that they’re holding each other’s hands, and the golden umbrella is way up above them.
Both creatures panic.
Male creature saw a vine and quickly held on to it.
He caught the female by the waist and did a ‘Tarzan action’-swayed their way up to the top of the rocky hills.
Male got up on his feet.
Female creature came soaring down from the air.
Male creature opened his arms and caught her just in time.
Female creature’s eyes twinkles (bats eyelashes*)
Golden umbrella fell from sky.
Again male caught it.
They both kiss.
The male creature gives a cheeky wink at the camera.
The end.

Idea 2: About an inanimate object attacking a girl.

Girl sitting on a bench in the park on a sunny afternoon.
Weather took on the downturn, it started to get windy and suddenly an umbrella was blown away to the scene.
Girl tried to catch umbrella.
When she caught it, the umbrella (this is where inanimate object attack inspiration comes in the scene) attacked her.
When the girl got hold of the umbrella, the umbrella pulled her.
Weather took for the worst, as it starts to rain heavily.
Girl got hold of the umbrella once again, she closes it, but it suddenly burst open.
Umbrella hook her shirt and took her in the clouds and drops her from the sky.
She fell on the trees, held on the branch for her life.
She looses grasp and fall.
Boy from out of nowhere caught her in her arms.
Weather turns back to sunny.
And it was LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.
The End.

As shown, idea 1 is the longer plot out of the 2- and for sure, it’s going to be a time consuming process especially that i am doing it through traditional hand drawn method. So if i’ve decided im doing idea 1 then i’ll be needing to shorten the plot and make it easier, so the story all flows in well together. For idea 2, there are quite a few things i feel like i need to change, so i’ll be updating this narrative once i got my final plot decided.

- Research ideas about object- varieties of umbrella types (will it evolve from a character to an umbrella or just a normal umbrella is use??)

ARTWORK PLANNING. OBJECT SKETCHES.

-Drawing development of the aesthetic of the umbrella as it is the main focus of the plot. Experiment this development on sketchbook.Scan to blog.

TECHNIQUE & NARRATIVE

-Finalise the plot,Choose technique, Basic plan of storyboard (quick sketches).Again keep the storyboard drawing on sketchbook.Then scan to blog for analysis.

Week 9 (15/11/10)

ARTWORK.

-Begin drawing the frames.

-Finalise the character design & the background that will be use.

BLOGGING

-Scan & upload to blog for analysis.

TESTING.

-Character animation test- test on the basic movements. (Does it somehow include the 12 basic principles of animation in the movement of the character? e.g, squash and stretch, anticipation, exxageration, appeal etc.)

Week 10 (22/11/10)

-Continue with frame drawings.

TESTING

-Again carry out Animation test. Further changes & adjustment where necessary.

BLOGGING

-Record all this on Blog. Then again include analysis.

Week 11 (29/11/10)

ARTWORK

-Last week for frame drawings. Finalise Artwork. (Fineline,inks & apply colour & shadings)

-Again record and scan these process on blog and analyse.

FILMING

-Film the animation in the rostrum using iStop Motion.

Ahh kay, so i came across this video in vimeo when i was searching for umbrella animations. Out of all the vids that i have posted, this one inspired me the most to do something similar with my “Umbrella Animation”. I like the whole plot, it’s simple and understandable- man in the city being attacked by an ’Inanimate object’.Adding to that i thought the secondary action of the character is really good, the character’s facial expression changes as well as keeping his body movements at the same time. I also thought i could use a bit of the plot here (the attack of the inanimate object) but of course mixing it with my own original narrative.

Again i came across this vid in vimeo, i thought i’d post it up because it made me think about the sort of narrative i would do. Few ways & variety of techniques popped in my head. Here are some of them; for instance, would i have my umbrella turn into a character?, or perhaps the other way around would i have a character that turns into an umbrella? (just like on the vid, where the cake turns into an umbrella) or just keep it simple by having a character holding the umbrella?, or would i have my umbrella as the ‘transport’ to the place where my character needs to be. ? There’s hundreds of ways i could do this. It doesn’t have to be the most obvious and have my object as the main focus in the film, but as long as i have that object there somewhere, that’s acceptable.

42 secs Animation.

This piece of animation was done in flash. I particulary like the use of bright pallete colours & the choice of soundtrack as it definitely expressed that playful and girly feel to it.
